Today Instapundit is troubled by the two east Texans who were discovered with some chemicals, ammo, bombs, and machine guns and the potential for cooperation with Arab terrorists.
That's fairly old news. More recently there was a guy arrested out here in west Texas on sex charges, and when his house was searched they found 400 pounds of explosives, blasting caps and a detonator cord. And this guy was a police officer right here in Midland, Texas, home of two presidents and the three time state champion Lee Rebels! Link.
This guy abused his position as a police officer, and that is a very, very serious offense in my book.
But, collecting weapons of one sort or another is a very common past time in Texas. Take a typical Texan and his gun collection to New York City, then call the cops. The New York Times would call it the next best thing to catching bin Laden.
When the weapons are illegal, that crosses the line, and anyone caught with a weapon he can't legally possess should be prosecuted.
But, in most cases those weird item collectors themselves probably don't represent a terrorist threat. They're just ordinary Texas nutcases who probably just want to be left alone. Usually, the only time they create havoc is when they are backed into a corner. Think David Koresh or Richard McLaren. Treat them like you would a nest of rattlesnakes. Clear them out if you want, or just give them a wide berth, and they'll leave you alone.
Now, those two east Texans could be very dangerous people, and I'm glad they got caught. But, the idea that they would team up with Arab terrorists just doesn't make sense. But then, I think Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone, so make your own judgment.
