A retired government worker passed through town today, stopped, said a few words, visited a while.
It was a huge event as George and Laura Bush paid a visit to their hometown before heading to Crawford where President Bush can finally relax. The master of ceremonies said there were 30,000 people in attendance, and since everyone had to pass through metal detectors then it's possible that a fairly accurate count could have been made.
It was a long wait, but we were treated with live music so good it was worth the hearing loss. And the Air Force One flyover was an unexpected treat.
We all appreciated President Bush's appearance today, and the speech was the payoff. "Popularity is as fleeting as the Texas wind," he said as he reminded us that he didn't govern by poll numbers.
So today a new president took the wheel, a president who campaigned on hope. Let's all hope our new president can make the right decisions, do the right things, and have the courage to follow through when he discovers that popularity is as fleeting as the Texas wind.
I was there, and it was awesome! Especially the flyover. From where I was it looked like the plane got so close to the BOA building.
And FYI, it's not the Air Force One (because a president was not aboard). Same plane, different name... It was named Special Mission 28000

Oh, OK. Thanks for the correction, Bert. My mistake.
Seeing that plane sure was a thrill. That was a first for me. The irony is that I had considered going to the airport to try to get a photo of it instead of going downtown. I'm sure glad I didn't do that. The view from downtown was probably better than any other spot that would have been available to me.

Nice shots, George. I was hoping you'd come through for us and you did. Well done.

I just want to say that He is an amazing man. I wish we could re-elect him as President. My first ever vote was for his second term. God Bless America!

Thanks, Les. It was a lot of fun.

Candice, thank you so much for sharing that. I think GWB did a pretty good job considering all the things that happened during his administration. I hope the history book writers will be able to see that and filter out all the trash people threw at him. The thing I admire most about him was his ability to ignore the insults. That took strength.

Thanks for the blog post! It amazes me that Fox News was the only network to cover the homecoming. It's local reporting like yours that will put the last nail in the coffin of The Fourth Estate!

Thanks for the kind words, Steve.
The folks at the big networks were falling all over themselves to cover the inauguration, but not the thing in Midland. It really brings home the meaning of the phrase "flyover country."
