Meet Barry Gumaer, local guy, National Guardsman, hero.
There are unsung heroes all over town this evening. And he's one of them.
It's Midland, Texas, and man oh man, did we have the rain. First there was rain, then there was hail, then there was more rain. Over three inches fell within a very short time this afternoon. And the streets were flooded.
The city streets serve an alternate purpose as conduits for water runoff in heavy rain, and they served that purpose well today. Unfortunately, people wanted to drive on them at the same time. Intersections all across town were flooded, and stalled cars were everywhere.
Here's one story. It was a typical intersection, the water was deep, and drivers kept driving. At least two cars stalled in the water in a brief period, and along came a local hero, a national guardsman with a jeep and a winch by the name of Barry Gumaer. He helped two stranded drivers at this intersection before he moved on, destined to help others, no doubt.
So here's a salute to the local heroes all across town tonight. Thanks, y'all. You make this country great.
And hopefully all stranded drivers eventually made it home tonight.
