Leslie Nielsen died the other day leaving a legacy of laugh out loud movies, and among them was Airplane! Many viewers, including me, thought that movie was a sendup of a series of earlier movies about near catastrophes involving air travel. Wrong.
S.M. Oliva sets us straight in Surely, You Can't Be Serious. The movie makers stumbled on a 1957 thriller playing on late night TV titled Zero Hour. They bought the rights and made a spoof.
This Youtube video captures several scenes from the two movies that are almost identical. It's a remarkable resemblance, and its a credit to the makers of Airplane! that they could remake it so outrageously.
Just think. In a few decades someone will make a serious movie about 9/11/2001. Then there will be copycats of that one. Then in another decade or so someone will make a parody of those movies. We should all live so long.
