Long long ago, in the time before circuit boards, cameras used film which had to be developed and then printed onto paper. It was a labor intensive process, and photographers had to take care to get the shot right the first time.
Shorpy.com is a site devoted to old photos, and it's well worth checking out. The photo you see on the right is an ancient banner ad before they jumped onto computers.
