Local taxpayers are bewildered by the Midland, Texas, city council's movement to demolish the courthouse and give taxpayer money to a builder to construct a skyscraper. Although they give some excuses for it, such as revitalizing downtown. Most of us suspect that the secret motivation is to build a monument to demonstrate how fantastically awesome they are.
So along comes a brilliant letter to the editor in this morning's Midland Reporter Telegram. It's not online, so an image is provided on the side. Click on it to enlarge the print size.
It's from Janice Courtney, and her point is brilliant. Instead of subsidizing someone to build a monster tower, build a Cosco Wholesale Club. Brilliant! There I've said it twice. If it's downtown activity they want, a Cosco will bring them in.
Non-subsidized builders are ready to build outside the downtown area. So maybe the government shouldn't interfere with the free market. Crony capitalism isn't good for anyone except the cronies.
