The Happy Crew at JPL
By now almost everyone has probably seen the first pictures snapped by the cameras on the Mars Exploration Rover Spirit, and they are fascinating indeed.
But, this entry is about happiness. Nothing can quite match the feeling generated by success. And the folks at the Jet Propulsion Lab certainly have a right to be happy. Just check out the smiles on those faces!
You're exactly right in saying the JPL folks deserve to be happy. This is an amazing feat of practical engineering, physics, computer programming and really, really good luck. But it's funny how lucky really competent people tend to be! ;-)

We've had so many last minute disappointments on Mars missions the last 5 years, this is a great accomplishment.

But is it really true that we landed on mars, or could it be made up like some say landing on the moon was?

Hmmm. The Mars landscape does look a lot like West Texas. It's even the same color! Heh heh.
Just kidding. It's couldn't be faked. There are too many thousands of people who would have to keep a secret, and that would be impossible.
