Today at Midland High School a Midland police officer and a couple of volunteers conducted drunk driving experiments with around a hundred students. Except the students weren't really drunk, they just wore drunk goggles.
The goggles didn't make anyone drunk, they just distorted their vision so much that it made them walk and drive like drunks.
The "car" was a golf cart, and the course was a path lined with traffic cones. "My little orange children" is the way one of the volunteers referred to them. But, they were so resilient! You could run right over them and they just sprang back into shape. And, they did get run over!
The course consisted of a lane change, a couple of sharp turns, and a zig zag section and took just a few minutes to transit. But, slow and steady was the winning strategy.
The students seemed to have a pretty good time. In any group of a hundred people the full spectrum of personality types will be represented, and that was the case today. Some treated it as a game, and some took it very seriously. But, all of them tried to do well on the obstacle course. And, hopefully the lesson was learned that impaired driving can be very hazardous.
As for the volunteers, they were members of Citizens on Patrol, or COPS. And, anyone interested in becoming a COPS volunteer would need to attend a COPS class which is a six hour course over two days with the next one beginning on Tuesday, April 27. If interested, call 685-7582 for more details.
I'm doing a project on alcohols effect on your body and wondered if there were a way I could make Fatal Vision Goggles.
