Redman in San Antonio emailed about an interesting election held there last weekend.
We had an interesting election here over the weekend. It was a "city charter reform" election with four items on the ballot. Three of them were as follows:1. Raise city council salaries,
2. Extend city council term limits from two, two year terms to three, three year terms, and
3. Increase city council's staff salaries.
The mayor, all sitting city council, unions, newspapers, TV stations, developers, and all the various minority public interest groups supported these propositions. Supporters spent $325,000 on the campaign. There was hardly any organized opposition, except for one group that spent $800 on one newspaper ad. All three propositions were defeated by two to one margins. [emphasis added]
The only thing that passed was an item to the increase the ethics board's funding.
And, to put a spin on the results, the mayor said that the voters weren't opposed to the reforms, they just didn't want to implement them all at once. Yeah, right.
Reminds me of the school bond that we MISTAKINGLY turned down several times before we finally said yes. Thank God our city leaders gave us another chance after we cast the wrong ballot in the first few times.
