The movie "2001, A Space Odyssey" was an amazing piece of science fiction cinema from the late 1960's that gave us a vision of a time far into the future, 2001, to be exact.
The movie was a great one, though. And one very prominent thing in the movie was that black monolith. It seemed to just pop up out of nowhere. But, it was significant because its appearance preceded an era inventiveness, and age of intellectual advancement. Apes learned how to use tools that helped them fend off predators. And in a mere scene change, humans were traveling in space.
All of this comes to mind, because last week a monolith appeared just outside my back fence. One of the independent contractors said it belonged to "Telecom." Another said "T-Com." It's tall, it's black, and it stinks of creosote. Oh yeah, it's leaning at about 5 degrees.
But, that won't matter because of the intellectual advancements that are sure to follow the appearance of this monolith. What'll it be? Maybe it foretells of an advancement in medicine, a cure for cancer for example. Or maybe it precedes an era of peace. Or maybe it's something more mundane, like free citywide highspeed broadband wireless internet connections. Whatever it is, it's bound to be a great boon to human advancement. At least I hope it is if I have to look at that hideous thing every time I go out the back door.
