Dear Mr. McCain,
Thank you for your letter -- it was good to hear from you again.
In it you asked: "What issues are most important to you today and how must they be addressed?" And you sent a survey questionnaire in multiple choice form with questions covering some of the issues that are currently in the news. There are two areas I would like to address.
First, you included a solicitation for money which causes me to reflect on your question number 52 that addresses the McCain-Feingold law, as follows:
"52. Though we have made major progress with passage of the 2002 Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act, do you support additional efforts to clean up our nation's politics and put an end to the corrupting influences that still impact Washington decision-making?"
That's a leading question, and if you really want honest opinions about it then you should rephrase that question. Free speech is such a fundamental part of our lives in American that it's easy to take it for granted. So when someone puts a ban on certain forms of expression then we should all be alarmed. In that regard I implore you to read the enclosed article by Bradley A. Smith of "The Examiner." If you prefer, you can read it on line here:
http://www.examiner.com/a-279321~Bradley_A._Smith:_Yes,_senator,_McCain-Feingold_does_censor_political_speech.html
It addresses the McCain-Feingold law, and specifically Mr. Feingold's contention that the law doesn't ban or censor speech. It does. And as a blogger I'm much more attuned to those sorts of things than I was when we last communicated some years ago.
Second, your questionnaire has sections on Homeland Security, National Security/War on Terror and Military Preparedness, but notably lacking is anything addressing the individual's right to protect him/her self with a gun. To the contrary, some of the bills you have co-sponsored would have the effect of restricting the 2nd amendment rights of individuals' rights in regard to guns.
The last communication you received from me was in the form of a small contribution in the year 2000 when your group was called "Straight Talk Express." And you are now asking me for more money, and presumably, a vote if you run for President in 2008.
In order for me to say "yes" there are two things I would ask of you:
First, work to repeal the 2002 Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act. A better approach is to require full disclosure of donors' names, sums donated, and recipients' names on the internet within 24 hours of the donation. Disclosure and transparency would be much more agreeable to Americans than censorship.
Second, support the 2nd amendment right of individuals to keep and bear arms. And stop sponsoring laws that restrict gun owners' constitutional rights.
I feel that deep down inside you probably really do respect free speech, and so you will probably approve of my posting this letter at my blog, Sleepless in Midland, which thanks to the hard work of a lot of people, is not currently censored by the McCain-Feingold law.
Sincerely,
George Johns
