The dog park naming contest drew 692 entries, and the winner was "Hogan's Run."
Animal Control Director Coy Willis awarded the first place prizes to Don Rainey in a short ceremony this afternoon at the dog park.
Christine Montgomery also entered the name "Hogan's Run," so there was a drawing for first place. Mr. Rainey's name was drawn, and Ms. Montgomery took home the second place prizes.
Hopefully a list of all the entries will be made available as there were plenty of other clever names submitted. My own entries can be seen here, one of which was "Bark Park." Fat chance. There were 35 other people who entered that same name. And one prolific park namer entered a grand total of 96 different names!
In the past city parks have been named by the City Council. But citizens have been so thoroughly involved in the development of the dog park that they were provided the opportunity to participate in naming it. Hence the contest. The Animal Control Department selected the winning name, and it was approved by the City Council.
The dog park is such a great place, and it could possibly be the most popular park in town. And dogs love it. They're social creatures, and they relish the opportunity to mingle with other canines. It's a nice place for the owners, too, and with the new shade structures coming soon, it's going to be very pleasant there this summer.
Kudos to everyone who helped bring the dog park to Midland. You did good, folks. And here's a big "thank you" to everyone who pitches in to help keep it clean.
[Correction: The number of people who entered the name "Bark Park," or a variation thereof, has been changed, above, following an examination of the list.]
