There's a quirk in the new postage stamp pricing. It could have been coincidental, but it was probably planned because it works out so well. It's the price of the second ounce.
A stamp for a first class letter weighing less than one ounce costs $0.41. And for each additional ounce it takes another $0.17.
So here's where that quirky logic comes in. At the previous rate, before the latest hike, the second ounce cost $0.24. In the past those of us who had a bunch of the old stamps ended up using them anyway but in a manner that added up to more postage than we really needed. Now add the new $0.17 stamp to the old $0.24 stamp, and there's the sum total for a first class letter at the new rate of $0.41. No wasted postage!
Thanks USPS. Thanks for the little things.
