He proposed. They set a date. He canceled. She sued.
She said -- After being a "couple" for several years, she broke it off and moved to Florida where she got a job paying $81,000 annually. He came to Florida, presented an engagement ring and proposed marriage. They agreed on a wedding date, and she moved to Georgia to live with him. Three days before the wedding date he left a note in the bathroom canceling the wedding but not the relationship. She moved out. Two months later he told her he needed more time to decide. And a month after that she discovered he had been seeing another woman. She had to become financially dependent on him but had to file for bankruptcy after the marriage was canceled. She sought judgment to satisfy her pecuniary loss, mental anguish, humiliation, injury to health and psyche, costs and attorney's fees, and punitive damages. See Gainesville News with link to the Complaint (pdf).
He said -- He gave her the engagement ring, and he paid $30,000 of her debt. But when he learned she owed even more money, he decided to end things.
What would you say? If you said he should pay her $150,000 then you've agreed with the jury.

His big mistake was leaving that note in the bathroom. It cost him dearly.

It's a strange case, Redman. I wonder if the note was introduced into evidence.
