Interesting study reported in Live Science, Swearing Makes Pain More Tolerable.
The test required that subjects place their hands in icy water while repeating a swear word. The control group repeated a non-swear word, and the cussers endured the discomfort longer than the polite group.
Swearing apparently arises from the emotional right side of the brain, whereas language generally comes from the left side. So maybe by extrapolation it could be said that engaging the emotion can override the pain signals.
Remember FCC vs. Fox about swearing on TV? About that, see What does the F-word mean?. Maybe swearing made the FCC fine more tolerable.
I guess this gives all the "Free Republicans" a reason to spout racial slurs at Obama in the comment section. Idiots.
