This particular price parity hasn't happened in a while. The price at the pump for diesel and unleaded, at least at one station, are the same.
Long ago diesel prices at the pump were cheaper, and that lead many people to buy vehicles powered by diesel. The vehicles pumped out a lot of smoke, and then the price of diesel fuel went up faster than the price of unleaded gasoline. There are many more knowledgeable people than I on this subject, but I would speculate that the increased price was due at least in part to regulations aimed at making diesel burn cleaner.
Supply and demand always play a part, too. And now maybe the refineries are overstocked with diesel.
In any event, at this particular place and point in time, the price of a gallon of unleaded is the same as a gallon of diesel.
If anyone reading this knows how that came about please fill us in.
