This morning the President issued a press release announcing he is trashing President Bush's plan for an Eastern European missile defense program.
There are plenty of reasons to distrust President Obama, especially in the realm of missile defense which all but the most independent of Democrats have been ridiculing since the '80s. A missile defense program is a weapon that is expected to save lives, and it seems silly to oppose it.
But any defense program has to be adaptable to changing information. And if the press release is truthful, that's what is happening here. Obama says the decision was based on new intelligence information and advances in the missile defense technology. And he says he has the unanimous recommendations of the Secretary of Defense and Joint Chiefs of Staff to back him up.
So unless some backroom deal comes to light, then let's give him the benefit of the doubt. Democrats did the country no favors by opposing each and every thing Bush proposed, and Obama's opponents can do better than that.
Good post
