Today's Wall Street Journal contains an article titled Lifting the Veil on Pricing for Health Care, and it contains a link to 23 Web Sites to Help You Figure Out Health Care Prices. The title should explain it all, and some of the links appear to provide some useful information given that obtaining prices for medical procedures is usually a time consuming and not always productive endeavor.
Anyway, prices are literally all over the map. Let's take tonsillectomy, something everyone knows about and which President Obama recently used as an example for an over prescribed surgery. For starters, Health Care Blue Book says the surgery performed in Midland Memorial Hospital would cost $5,340. Texas Price Point says the average cost of seven such surgeries in 2007 was $5,497. They don't seem to be that far off, assuming either is accurate.
But there are some bargains out there. Surgery Center of Oklahoma offers a flat rate of $ 3,000. (Add another $450 to get rid of those adenoids, too.) Not much selection, though. You get whichever doc is on duty.
But for jet settering risk takers willing to travel world wide for a bargain, check out International Surgery Discounts for services in " India, Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, Malaysia, South Africa, Costa Rica, China, Columbia, & many more medical destinations." A tonsillectomy will run $839, with no waiting! Mmm, I think I'll save up and stay a little closer to home.
I must say this is a great article i enjoyed reading it keep the good work
