George Soros is a financial wizard who used his skills to amass a fortune, most famously, by shorting the Pound during the British financial crisis in the early 90's. Although at only $11 billion he's way down to number 29 on Forbe's Billionaire list.
He's also a wanna-be political king maker. Sourcewatch.org says he contributed multiple millions to anti-conservative groups. And it's tempting to spin a conspiracy theory whereby Mr. Soros helped engineer Obama's election so Soros could make a killing by shorting the dollar.
But wait, take a look at this. As recently as June of '09 he was criticizing Obama's economics. He said the Bush administration messed up the handling of the banking problems -- they should have dealt with the bad assets rather than pumping up banks' balance sheets. He could be right. But, Obama didn't do any better. "We needed to have radical change," he said, adding "I don't think the Obama Administration is ready for radical change."
"Radical change" is probably why he supported Obama, and failure to deliver may have soured him on the Oba-magic. Soros is an old style Euro-socialist, and one has to wonder what his concept of "radical change" may have been.
But let's give him the benefit of the doubt and say he may not be a conspirator of the sort who would willingly hurt the U.S. for his own financial gain. But the dollar bust has to be gravy on the steak for him if he is putting his money where his mouth is as he talks down the U.S. economy.
