It happens a couple of times a year -- it's the Keep Midland Beautiful call to the citizens to get out and help clean up trash around the city. Do it, show up at the festival site, and you get a hot dog and T-shirt. Great fun! Kudos to the folks who put this together.
We're all expected to pick up our own trash, and most people do it. But there are those who don't. In their defense, sometimes a high wind can steal that plastic bag from their hands and send it flying. However, when there's trash in the streets, parks, and vacant lots most people feel no responsibility to do anything about it.
Dog park users see it. There are always piles of left over dog crap that no one bothered to pick up. Many of the dog owners are diligent about picking up their own dog's droppings, but if their precious dog didn't do it, forget it.
Maybe that's the famous tragedy of the commons. Someone else should have done it, but they didn't. Not my job.
Someone somewhere figured out that an organized effort like these community clean-up efforts could get people to do those distasteful things. And it works. Today there were bunches of people out cleaning up the commons. Congratulations for rising above the crowds and doing the dirty work. And kudos to the people who put this thing together. Smart work, y'all.
AT post! Thanks for sharing.
