We are always hearing warnings about unauthorized snooping at Wi-Fi hotspots, so it's nice to know banks are trying to make online banking safer. Here's a neat new security device that Bank of America is offering customers. It's called Safepass. One can never feel completely secure when using free wi-fi, but banking transactions should be a little safer with this.
It's a service that will send a one-time six digit pass-code text message to the customer's texting device which is then required for large online bank transfers or adding new payees. The customer can elect whether it will be required for signing onto online banking, so the user could save it for travel.
For those without a texting device -- that would be me -- a card the size of a credit card is available for $20 which generates the pass-code at the push of a button. Pretty cool in a belt plus suspenders sort of way.
As for keeping the snoopers out of our other Wi-Fi hotspot business, a VPN might be the way to go.
