I too am tired of seeing a new multi-million dollar government project every time I read the news. In this case, I think the real reason behind furnishing rural broadband access is so that Ma Bell's progeny can get out from under the responsibility of maintaining a copper infrastructure. That's the only economic benefit I see.

Telephone service has been considered a basic utility for many years and subsidized by every phone customer to assure the more remote homes have it. The only way to get out of that obligation is to replace the copper with broadband.

Or maybe the general attitude of the liberal majority now really is that internet service itself should be a basic utility so that all the country kids can waste away their lives on Facebook like their city snowflake cousins.

Hmm. I hadn't thought of that, Les. You may be onto something.
