I think Toyoda is the head guy at Toyota. He's the founder's grandson. I have no idea why the two are spelled differently.

Looks like it's my own mistake this time.

I just had to re-visit this post after listening this weekend to a podcast of the NPR program "Wait, Wait Don't Tell Me". On that podcast a panelist revealed why the car company started by Toyoda was named Toyota. Apparently, the number of pen strokes required to write the names in Japanese are 11 for Toyoda and 10 for Toyota. Because an even number is lucky to the Japanese, the car company name was changed. Ta Da!
