Harry Shearer is probably best known for giving a voice in "The Simpsons" to some of the pillars of Springfield such as Principal Skinner, Montgomery Burns and Ned Flanders.
But Shearer, an outspoken liberal, bumped up against a media template when he produced The Big Uneasy, a documentary which placed the blame for the New Orleans Katrina flooding squarely on design and construction errors by the Army Corps of Engineering but didn't deal with the flood aftermath or the response. That didn't fit the media template, and he hit a brick wall in trying to get coverage for his documentary.
He even bought NPR commercial time -- NPR calls them "underwriting announcements" -- but had to change the wording "documentary about why New Orleans flooded" to "documentary about New Orleans and Hurricane Katrina."
But hey, he can tell it best. Read it in his own words at Media: The Template Theory.
