Government archives online provide some some fun facts and and fascinating history.
For example, in 1898, Annie Oakley wrote a letter to President McKinley expressing her confidence that he could avoid war with Spain, but in case of such an event she offered to send 50 lady sharpshooters to assist. Every one would be an American, and by providing their own arms and ammo it would be of little expense to the government.
A loyal American, a great shot, and a cost conscious citizen -- what a gal!
And who knows? Had she gone to war, she may have ended up in the White House, as did another volunteer in the Spanish-American War.

Jeff, women didn't yet have the right to vote, but you are right, who know what might have happened?
