A news release at IRS.gov provides some interesting stats on e-filing. Of the tax returns filed in 2010 almost 70% were filed electronically.
They say that almost 35 million were e-filed from a home computer. Turbo Tax and H&R Block must be doing pretty good. And their lobbyist are probably already greasing the chute to dump any alternative should there be a serious effort by lawmakers to replace the income tax.
That 35 million is about a third of the e-filed returns and about a quarter of the total returns filed.
Here are some raw numbers for 2010:
Total returns filed: 141,536,000
Total returns e-filed: 98,740,000
Total returns e-filed from home computers: 34,847,000.
All this and more at IRS.gov. Specifically, see: Nearly 70 Percent of Taxpayers Used IRS e-file in 2010.

Thanks for the info, Les. Seems like I heard that there's a new license requirement for tax preparers. But I'm sure the people helping with that are qualified.
As for me doing it, I'm helpless without my off the shelf tax program.
