Stunned. That's got to be the general reaction to the reports coming out about the Stuxnet virus.
It had to take a lot of thought, experience and man/hours to construct, and the theory is that only a nation state would have the resources and motivation to build this fascinating worm. The virus crept through enough computers to finally reach its target, speeding and slowing the Iranian nuclear centrifuges to the point of impairment. It was a very impressive bit of malware. So impressive, in fact, that Phillip Klein says the "Stuxnet" Designer Should Be Person of the Year.
Interestingly, the Microsoft patches of 12/14/10 declare that, "The Stuxnet patch isn’t deemed critical." Well now, that's reassuring.
The usual suspects are the U.S. and/or Israel, especially Israel. But wait just a minute. Jeffrey Carr makes a very compelling case that it was China. Uh oh. The feeling just shifted from fascination to scared shirtless.
