This has been a baffling mystery -- why have severed feet been washing up on the upper West Coast shore? A total of twelve feet washed up on the shores of Canada and Washington state in the past four years with the most recent one last August.
An educated guess may have been proven correct. The theory was that a human body would come apart over time in the ocean, and feet strapped in light weight sneakers might eventually get washed ashore.
The theory was confirmed as two of the feet have been identified as belonging to female who committed suicide by jumping off a New Westminster, B.C., bridge in 2004 wearing New Balance shoes.
Four people have been identified so far.
It might be too much to expect potential bridge jumpers to put light weight sneakers on their to-do list. But there have been so many cruise ship passengers overboard lately people planning a cruise should certainly take note.
"Honey, be sure to pack some light weight running shoes for our honeymoon cruise."
"Why, will we be jogging?"
"No, in case you go overboard, your feet might wash up. By the way, did you sign that life insurance form?"
"The wedding is off."
