Ahoy, maties. Be you friend or foe sailing these rivers?
OK, they probably won't participate in Talk Like a Pirate Day. However, the Texas Department of Public Safety will be cruising the rivers. They recently showed off the "J.D. Davis," a new gunboat which they say will patrol the waters marking the Southern Texas border. The video shows three 300 horsepower Mercury outboard motors powering the thing, and automatic weapons stick out quite impressively. KHOU.com says this:
The $580,000 shallow water interceptor can patrol in just 12 inches of water and is the first of a planned fleet of six such vessels comprising the newly-created Highway Patrol Tactical Marine Unit.
A similar report can be found at KXAN.com.
It's a sleek looking vessel, and those three motors should really make it move. Hey ordinance experts, is that a Saw mounted up there?
great video of this boat in action here

you planning to see the Monterey Bay Aquarium (I hope). Also, don't miss Pt. Lobos (state reersve). (And Asilomar is wonderful. And Lover's Point. And even tho Cannery Row is total kitsch now, you can still find some buildings from Steinbeck's day. And if you have a chance to pick up the Log Book from the Sea of Cortez to read while you're there (and/or Sweet Thursday) well, life is good.
