A reporter at the El Paso Times has calculated the murder rates in Mexico for the first five years of the past five presidential administrations and determined that current President Felipe Calderon's administration can boast a lower murder rate than all but one, his immediate predecessor, Vicente Fox.
International focus is on the war on drugs, and Mr. Calderon has taken a lot of heat for the violence that news watchers see on their TVs. But according to this, there have been periods in Mexico's history that have been much more violent.
Click chart to see the graphic. The way it's displayed, featuring totals for the first five years of each of five administrations, leaves a little bit to be desired. But it's all they provide. And the stats at inegi.org showing percentage of deaths from homicide with respect to the total number of violent deaths from 1990-2010, while not an ideal comparison either, shows a climbing rate with the highest in 2010.
But taking the El Paso Time's research at face value, we have to recognize that Mexico has had a bloody history. And maybe Mr. Calderon deserves some credit for reducing the blood flow rate.
Via The Corner where a commenter notes that the murder rate might have been even lower had the DOJ not been running guns to Mexican cartels.
Good for El Paso, crime rate has reduced. What could have their government done in eradicating rampant crimes. What could be their motivating factor towards the citizens of Mexico. Other countries like the United States can really use some help.
