Democrats are all about safety nets, and old school liberals probably thought of that as a safety net for the sick, the poor, the underprivileged, etc.
But the Democratic National Convention has a safety net of its own in the form of a $10 million line of credit provided by Duke Energy. If the company has to make good on that the shareholders will probably be very forgiving since Duke itself received a whopping government "stimulus" in 2009. From The Washington Free Beacon:
Just as Rogers has helped fund Democratic politicians, they, in turn, have helped steer massive amounts of federal funding to Duke Energy. The 2009 stimulus package, for instance, was a boon for the company: Duke received federal grants totaling $230.4 million for a number of “green” energy projects including “smart grid” development and wind energy storage.
"Rogers" in the quoted paragraph is Jim Rogers, the CEO of Duke Energy, and coincidentally, co-chairman and lead fundraiser for the Democratic National Convention host-committee.
This comes to us via Tim Carney who notes that with all the attention liberal news outlets give to money in politics they seem remarkably silent on this one.
