The main differences in the Romney, Obama and Simpson-Bowles taxing plans are set out at Taxfoundation.org.
A very informative table found at that site provides an easy to read overview. In sum, Romney wants to lower taxes, and Obama wants to raise some and maintain others. Rather than trying to denote the differences, it's easier to note the one thing on which they agree: They both want an 18¢ per gallon gasoline tax.
Unfortunately, those of us who would prefer real reform, like a flat tax or even the sales tax, are out of luck. Neither of the two candidates are promising anything remotely like that.
And what should be the most sobering aspect of the aforementioned table is the last line providing the year in which we should expect a balanced budget under the various plans:
Simpson-Bowles 2037; Romney 2020; Obama Never. (Emphasis added).
The theme of the Obama campaign: "We don't understand the numbers either. But don't worry, be happy. And trust us like you did the last time."
