For politically correct terrorism training call the enemy zombies

How do you conduct terrorism training without calling the enemy a name that offends someone? A "terrorist" is someone else's freedom fighter, we were once told. They can't be Muslims because politically powerful groups take such offense when Muslims are singled out as potential terrorists. There can be no race, origin or gender distinction or you risk violating some federal law.

The politically correct solution is to call them "zombies." So for the five days of Oct. 30 to Nov. 2 the "Zombie Apocalypse" is supposed to be taking place at the Paradise Point resort in San Diego at a cost of $1,000 per participant where Marines, Navy special ops, soldiers, police, firefighters and others train to deal with terrorists or zombies or something.

For the rest of us there's always the CDC's Preparedness 101: Zombie Apocalypse.

Well, regarding Obama and gun control I would refer you to this site where a blogger has a detailed list of positions Obama took on gun control. But Obama's talent is making his fans believe he agrees with them, so if you think Obama opposes gun control then these may not apply to the Obama you think you know.

As for the lack of respect for the Constitution, look at the czars, the recess appointments, the kill lists, fast and furious, abuse of war powers, and so on.

But all of this is simply partisan politics. In other words, if your guy does them it's OK, but if the other guy does them then it's the worst thing in the world.

The real issue in the coming election is whether or not the voter wants a cradle to grave nanny state with an economy that can't pay for it.

Hurricane reporters wading the path to greatness

It's hard not to laugh at TV reporters sometimes, especially in hurricane season.

They are so earnest and exited. Newcomers to hurricane prone territories become jaded by about the second season they are there. That's the case on the Gulf Coast, anyway. Sometimes it pays to get exited, but usually most of the gusting wind comes from the reporters' mouths.

Now granted, hurricane Sandy did bring a large amount of water on land. But in the midst of it the streets of NYC looked damp but not flooded as people strolled in view of the Times Square web cam.

Back to the TV. I don't remember which network it was, but there was the typical hurricane reporter standing out in the wind and rain talking to the camera. And he remarked about all the other people out and about as the hurricane was just off coast and how they should not be there. He was so quick witted he immediately recognized that he himself was violating his own advice. But it was OK because he was a trained reporter. Hilarious!

Dan Rather blazed the hurricane reporting trail, and intrepid reporters have been following the soggy footprints of that questionable roll model ever since.

Even the Chi-Coms saw a problem with over taxing the rich

Richard W. Fulmer, in a blog post titled Whipping the Fast Ox pulls an item from Commanding Heights, the battle for the world economy. He notes that after Mao's death there were some within the Chinese Communist Party who recognized a problem with putting a heavy tax burden on the most successful.

"Whipping the fast ox" was the analogy they used, and what a great one that is. If the most productive are punished then there would be no incentive to excel. It's really that simple.

The Benghazi Alamo

This story brought tears to my eyes. It's the story told by a ScotOnCapeCod' Weblog about the bravery displayed by Tyrone Woods and Glen Doherty. (Found at Instapundit.) Here's an excerpt:

A short distance from the American compound, two Americans were sleeping. They were in Libya as independent contractors working an assignment totally unrelated to our embassy. They also happened to be former Navy SEALs. When they heard the noise coming from the attack on our embassy, as you would expect from highly trained warriors, they ran to the fight. Apparently, they had no weapons, but seeing the Libyan guards dropping their guns in their haste in fleeing the scene, Tyrone Woods and Glen Doherty snatched up several of these discarded weapons and prepared to defend the American compound.

Not knowing exactly what was taking place, the two SEALs set up a defensive perimeter. Unfortunately Ambassador Stevens was already gravely injured, and Foreign Service officer, Sean Smith, was dead. However, due to their quick action and suppressive fire, twenty administrative personnel in the embassy were able to escape to safety. Eventually, these two courageous men were overwhelmed by the sheer numbers brought against them, an enemy force numbering between 100 to 200 attackers which came in two waves. But the stunning part of the story is that Tyrone Woods and Glen Doherty killed 60 of the attacking force. Once the compound was overrun, the attackers were incensed to discover that just two men had inflicted so much death and destruction.

As it became apparent to these selfless heroes, they were definitely going to lose their lives unless some reinforcements showed up in a hurry. As we know now, that was not to be. I’m fairly certain they knew they were going to die in this gun fight, but not before they took a whole lot of bad guys with them!

That story really touched a nerve with me. But then, I wore a Davy Crockett coon skin cap as a kid until it fell apart. Change the names and this old joke becomes current again:

Santa Anna received a report from the Alamo that only one Texan remained standing. The general sent troops in to mop up, but they were all killed. The General kept sending more troops. And they met the same fate. Each succeeding force was pushed back. "WOW," said Santa Anna. "That is the toughest Texan I've ever seen!" Finally, Santa Anna sent the largest battalion that he could muster, and they were wiped out except one lone survivor who crawled back to say, "Presidente, Presidente, don't send in anymore troops. It's a TRICK. It's a TRICK. There are TWO OF THEM!!

Why would someone need to lock their refrigerator? There's a serious lack of will power if dieting is involved. I ran across this refrigerator door lock at Amazon.com a while back and couldn't figure out why anyone would need one.

Then it finally hit me. It's to keep the cats out!

Definitions to help us understanding progressive words and phrases

President Obama is fond of made-up words to deride the man who plans to replace him in the White House. Words like Romnesia. That word doesn't means what Mr. Obama thinks it means. Here's the real meaning: A condition of desperation resulting from looking in your rear view mirror and not seeing your opponent.

This might be a good time to pull up some definitions of the key terms used by Progressive American. Cliff Asness wrote them, and you can see the whole list at the link below. Here are a few to get us started.

Regular Americans
Definition: People who support me.

Special Interests
Definition: People who support you.

The Phrase “Deny Access to…”
Used in a sentence: “It is unfair to deny access to healthcare to 26 year olds living off their parents.”
Definition: When a person isn’t given something they want for free, and they have not found a way to steal it yet, they have been “denied access” to it. In general it is the “1%” that “denies access.” See “1%” below.

The 1%
Definition: Those who pay more than 1/3 the total federal income tax and are never thanked for it. More generally, they are responsible for all evil in the world today (unless they work in Hollywood or hi-tech in which case they are “honorary 99%-ers” regardless of income, tax rate, and lifestyle).

Universal Health Care
Definition: The system formerly known as single payer.

Single payer Health Care
Definition: The system formerly known as socialized medicine.

Socialized Medicine
Definition: Something Democrats claim they don’t want, as they simply want Universal Health Care.

How to give foreign aid

There's a satirical piece on how to give aid to Nigeria and Nigerians titled How to Give Foreign Aid which really hammers a nail that needs hammering.

The implication is that guilt is the predominant motivator of the giver. Here's an excerpt:

Sometimes you must ignore the small negatives so you can focus on the big picture. The government is corrupt. You know they are stealing half of the aid money that comes in, but what do wicked critics want you to do? Leave and let Nigeria perish? Your conscience will not allow you to do that. After you have pushed the aid out your door, (people don’t realize but this is hard work too), it will be wicked of anyone to expect you to be held responsible for how every penny is used.

I see your good foreign heart. I know that little by little you will save the third world from self-destruction, disease and poverty. I am not sure how, but I feel it. I feel it the way a wife knows her husband is cheating even when she can’t find the evidence yet- wives know these things.

And come to think about it, this could apply to domestic do-gooders as well.

local government bond debt still under a billion -- school district hopes to change that

There is no minimum percentage of registered voters required for a bond election to succeed. So big debt loads are often placed on taxpayers by a very few ardent supports of the bond.

That may change this year in Midland, Texas, where a big school bond vote coming up this November in which voters will also be electing a president. That's sure to bring out huge numbers of voters. And the supporters of the big Midland Independent School District bond of $163 have been in high gear trying to build support.

The photo on the right came from Your Money and Local Debt, Texas Comptroller Susan Combs' site in which she attempts to alert Texans about the huge level of debt their local governments have undertaken for taxpayers to pay back. Her list of the top ten most populous states puts Texas at number two for local debt with a per capita debt amount of $7,983.

According to the Texas Bond Review Board search engine, the bond debt outstanding for taxpayers in Midland as of 8/31/11 is as follows:

So as you can see, we haven't yet reached the $1 billion mark. But take heart. An article in Sunday's Midland Reporter Telegram contained an article titled, Will voters pass the largest bond in Midland's History? lays out what happens next:

The $163.1 million elementary schools bond is phase one of a two-phase district reconfiguration plan to create true middle schools and move freshmen onto high school campuses. ...

Three different options were presented, with the projects ranging from $360 million to $500 million.

Billion dollar debt here we come! Maybe this is a good point to insert a chart from the Cato Institute:

As you can see, costs per student have climbed drastically, but unfortunately, SAT math and reading scores stayed flat. If U.S. students were outscoring students in other countries it might be easier to ignore the cost. But sadly, it is costing more and more just keep them dumb.  We need to be giving them better tools with which to pay off all of the debt they'll inherit.

Italian earthquake scientists convicted for bad prediction

They were members of the National Commission for the Forecast and Prevention of Major Risks, and they took it upon themselves to try to calm the residents of L'Aquila, Italy, after several tremors shook the ground. Unfortunately, a big one followed, and 309 people died.

This seemed more like a civil matter rather than a criminal one. But the prosecutor made it criminal. And the judge came back with a verdict -- six scientists and one bureaucrat were found guilty and sentenced to six years in the slammer. See BBC. Excerpt:

Prosecutors said the defendants gave a falsely reassuring statement before the quake, while the defence maintained there was no way to predict major quakes.

Both of those statements could be true. The problem was that the commissioners didn't fully explain to the recipients of their advice the risk involved in taking that advice. To quote a helpful explanation from a character in the movie Animal House, "You f***** up. You trusted us."

They should have had some American lawyers on hand to provide a shopworn disclaimer like, "Past performance doesn't guarantee future results."

We talked about this in 2011 when the prosecution commenced the action. See previously. And as we noted then, if this is a crime, those scientists who did all of that scare mongering about man made global warming should be next on the docket.

Digging up Spitfires

A WWII RAF Spitfire was sold at auction in 2009 -- see previously -- and the winning bid was a cool £1,739,500.

But there may be more of them coming onto the market. A British farmer named David Cundall has been following up rumors for years about a bunch of Spitfires that were buried in Burma in 1945 by U.S. troops so they wouldn't be found by the Japanese. And he thinks he has found them.

The original find was thought to be about 20 planes, but updated estimates put that number at 140.

So as we wrote when Cundall announced his find, the Spitfires are buried in the original crates with their wings folded back along their bodies, covered in grease and wax paper. Their joints are even tarred and they're expected to be in pristine condition.

The Americans buried the planes, covered them with 40 feet of soil and assumed the British would be back later to dig them up and wipe them off, but the RAF never bothered.

The old war birds fell out of favor after the war, and only later did anyone realize the importance of saving them for their historical value. So in the U.S. groups like the CAF began preserving and putting on annual air shows with them. There must be similar groups in the U.K. If Mr. Cundall's find turns up a few Spitfires maybe one of CAF groups could bring some to the U.S. Now that would be an air show to see.

Moving on up -- the most expensive zip codes in the U.S.

The Upper East Side, New York, NY 10065, tops the list at a median asking price of $6.5 million. That's according to Forbes.com which has a list of the top 100 zip codes with the most expensive houses. George Jefferson would be right at home.

The closest I'll get to them will be these overhead photos of the top 15 at BusinessInsider.com.

Ah, the good life. It must be nice, but only for those people who don't mind paying property taxes which must be outrageous, even for those few that are in red states.

TV show "Revolution" -- NBC writers plug in Joe Biden's name

There's a TV show in its first season called Revolution which is supposed to depict a time 15 years from the day someone cast a magic spell across the planet which acted as a universal "off" switch shutting off everything that ran on or used electricity.

It looks like another of those serials that goes on for season after season with sympathetic characters in an endless quest for some holy grail of electrical power, which somehow involves a dozen magic medallions.

Anyway, the citizens of the former United States become unwilling subjects of a militia run by a ruthless leader. But take heart, there are some revolutionaries out amongst the people. And our handsome heroes and beautiful heroins have teamed up with them.

And here's the reason for this particular post. In the latest segment one of the revolutionaries connects with a fellow revolutionary by way of a pass phrase which assures each of them that the other is a brother/sister. Here it is:

"I'm looking for a biography of Joe Biden."

Hilarious. Gold plated irony.

Good fiction has to be believable. And this was one of those moments that strained credulity to the breaking point.

The script writers are supposed to be injecting propaganda for "Obamacare" into their shows, but maybe they just couldn't fit Obamacare into the script knowing that it required a bureaucracy bigger than anything else so far revealed in the series. So "Joe Biden" was the best they could come up with. It's every bit as out of place as the scene in the last episode of Life on Mars when the hero is told that one of Barack Obama's daughters is president in the year 2035.

It's almost enough to make a TV viewer yearn for a blackout.

Pre-existing conditions and the uninsured

My head is still spinning from reading the WSJ article the other day titled The Better Solution for 'Pre-Existing Conditions' by John C. Goodman.

The problem, as presented by the pro-Obamacare people, was that millions of people with pre-existing conditions were unable to obtain medical insurance. That was the whole foundation for the albatross that came to be known as Obamacare. Never mind that many states, *like Texas, already had programs through which people who were unable to buy insurance could get it.

Along came President Obama, Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid to save the day with Obamacare. But here's the result of all that. As of July 31, 2012, only 82,000 people have enrolled in the program. Resource: Kaiser Family Foundation website Statehealthfacts.org.

From Mr. Goodman's article, an astonishing observation:

That is not a misprint. Out of a population of more than 300 million, some 82,000 have the problem that was cited as the principal reason for spending $1.8 trillion over the next 10 years and in the process turning the entire health-care system upside down.

Please, my poor head, stop spinning.

Some righteous citizen outrage over the hotel/motel tax, finally

Had to laugh at an item on the local TV news last week. Seems that some citizens took it upon themselves to help alleviate the housing shortage by renting out rooms to the Permian Basin Oil Show attendees.

So along came the state comptroller warning them they have to collect the hotel/motel tax. Link. So maybe now some of those citizens will display a little righteous outrage over that tax.

The hotel/motel tax is one of the more sinister taxes governments collect, because it's a tax on passers-by who typically don't get to vote in that jurisdiction. To the taxing entities it is free money.

They say the reason hotels and motels are flashing "No Vacancy" signs is because many oil field workers are living there because they can't find other accommodations. Meanwhile, that money taken from them for the hotel/motel tax is supposed to be used to bring even more people into the city. All taxes are permanent, of course, so the fact that it outlived its purpose is irrelevant.

Presidential election decision boils down to one question

Do you want more government or less government? Do you want government telling you what you can and cannot; will and won't do? Or do you want a government that safeguards our rights while respecting our individual freedoms? Honestly, no matter what the issue, this simple question applies.

The long version:

To put it another way, do you: a) want a federal government that deeply roots itself into your everyday life, that diminishes the localized power of the State governments, that exercises the advancement of social engineering and literally has something to do with every aspect of your life creating an adherent and dependent populace, or b) want a government that honors the limitations set forth by the US Constitution, that creates a color, gender and religiously blind atmosphere of opportunity for all, that empowers the ingenuity and creativity of the individual while nurturing the development of personal responsibility, creating a strong, successful, resilient and unique nation?

OK, that's more than on question, but it still seems like a no-brainer.

British boobs getting bigger

This is huge news. A large UK department store chain called Debenhams revealed that over the past two years the average size of bras sold increased by two or three sizes.

Wales, however, wins the biggest average bra award, with an E-cup being the bestselling size in its stores there. ...

The chain's head of lingerie buying and design, Sharon Webb, said there had definitely been a change.

She said: 'Sales suggest that breasts are bigger than ever before.'

Get a grip on that!

Radioactive rods do it deeper

We all know by now that a Halliburton work crew lost a radioactive rod somewhere in the deserts of West Texas. It must not have represented too much of a threat, otherwise some of the many available resources would have been deployed, such as airborne pipeline leak detectors and sniffer drones.

The rod turned up along side of a road between job sites, but it certainly took long enough to find. With newspapers as far away as Britain's Guardian reporting about it it was time to put the Sleepless investigative reporters on the case. And they came back with some reasonable theories about what might have happened to the rod in the interim:

1. Driver used it to warm up his day old Bold Pick of the Day.

2. Wanted to sell it in Iran but TomTom took them to Iraan.

3. Got frightened by news reports and used it as West Nile mosquito repellent.

4. Used it as a glow stick at Cirque Chinois show.

5. Used it to charge a dead truck battery but truck melted.

6. Tried to sell it to Mexican drug cartel but were told, "No mas! No mas! Fast and Furious! No mas!"

AEI's video prize winners

The American Enterprise Institute announced the prize winners for its contest for videos making the moral case for free enterprise in under two minutes. And today they announced the winners.

These photos were taken by the critter cam Sunday mid afternoon and after sunset.

There were a bunch of sparrows around, but they weren't nearly as photogenic as the bluejay.

That squirrel should be fox food.  A wild canine should at least help keep the rodent population down.

Speaking of fox food, I had not yet put food out when the fox showed up shortly after nightfall. He spent quite some time scrounging around, and he didn't come back after I put out the bait. A neighborhood cat got it. Maybe Fox Trot will have better luck tonight.

Not sold on Obamacare? Gov to spend more money to convince us.

Over at WashingtonExaminer.com Joel Gehrke tell us that HHS handed a PR firm a $3.1 million contract to raise awareness about some Obamacare features.

This, according to Mr. Gehrke, is addition to the $20 million contract awarded earlier this year to a PR firm headed by an Obama crony to educate the masses about Obamacare.

They had to pass the law to find out what's in it. Now they have to spend taxpayer money to tell us what's in it. How about just repeal it.

Nocturnal neighborhood scavengers

There are wild animals living amongst us, especially foxes. But they are so wily it's difficult to get a photo of one.

So I set out a wildlife camera in the back yard to try to capture one with scraps from a store bought roasted chicken for bait.

The overfed cat that showed up at 1:43am is a neighborhood regular, but he wasn't interested in the chicken.

Here's the sleepless proprietor at 4:54am disappointed that the bait was still there.

Then about 20 minutes later, payday!

Foxy took the bait!

That was Friday morning, 10/5/12, although the date stamp on the pic was a day off due to user error. The cat showed up again early this morning, but the fox didn't. Maybe he'll come back tonight.

And who knows what other wildlife lurks in our midst? Maybe even a bear might swing by for a bite.

Updated 40 minutes later: Tricked! The fox eat the bait while I was writing this blog post. And the camera was turned off! Dammit. Now I know how Wile E. Coyote must have felt.

Obama sticker sighting

The bloom is definitely off the rose, and there aren't many of these on display this time around.

But here's one spotted in an eatery parking lot at lunchtime today in Midland, Texas. It's hard to generalize, however the baby seat in the truck bed does provide a clue as to the voting demographic.

What if a president gave an applause line and no one applauded?

I happened last night at the beginning of the presidential debate. President Obama probably didn't hear Jim Lehrer's admonition to the audience to keep quiet after the introductions and hold their noise until the end. To the audience's credit, they did, at least in the parts I saw.

So both Romney and Obama got introduced and both got their applause. Then the debate began with Obama getting the first question. He began his response with a heart warming shout out to his wife about their anniversary -- an applause line if there ever was one. The audience sat in silence. Obama's grin faded into a stunned look. That night was probably the first time in a long time, if ever, where he provided a crafted applause line and got back nothing.

It threw the cool one off balance, and he didn't recover.

Another example how media influences politics

Apparently, it's popular to publish articles prior to political debates about previous debate blunders. For example here is Yahoo with The 12 Most Cringe-Worthy Debate Moments in History. And here's Washington Post with The 10 most memorable moments in presidential debates.

Neither could pass a chance to take jab at George H.W. Bush for glancing at his watch during a televised debate. Here was a candidate who didn't have the time and patience for all of this, you see. At least that was the narrative that prevailed.

You had to have watched a debate a few years earlier to know why Bush checked his watch. Each candidate typically had a set amount of time in which to answer a question, and GHWB got burned badly in a debate with Michael Dukakis. He had answered a question then gave a good conclusion. Media wonder Diane Sawyer was the questioner, and she looked at Bush and said, you've got a minute left, then just stared at him. So Bush simply made his point again and then brought it to a close with a similar conclusion.

I'm paraphrasing Sawyer, it could have been two or more minutes, I don't remember. But the point is that it was a big mistake on Sawyer's part to disrupt the flow of his speech to such an extent. Saturday Night Live had a field day with it. Sawyer got off Scot free, and Bush paid the price.

Four years later Bush checked his watch during a debate with Clinton to make sure he timed his answer precise enough to satisfy the liberal moderators. And you know the rest of the story. They nailed him for that. There is just no satisfying some people.

Democrats search for presidential debate parties to attend

Barackobama.com invites visitors to be a part of the moment, i.e., attend a party to watch the presidential debate with other Obama fans on October 3. All you do is fill in a zip code, and a Google map will pop up showing a party location.

As of yesterday folks here in Midland, Texas, were out of luck. As you can see from the screen shot, the closest party shown was in the next state. On the other hand, use zip code 20001 (Washington, DC) and get hundreds of locations.

I didn't know Harvest Caffe served Kool-Aid.

Happy birthday Media Research Center

Today is their 25th birthday. Media Research Center has made a major contribution to the public discourse by exposing media bias in a way that gets noticed as well as providing a voice for those who are disgusted by it.

Unfortunately, the reporters MRC highlights are usually so biased they are unable to recognize it in themselves. Or more likely they just don't bother to hide it anymore.

Last week MRC had its 25th Anniversary Gala and 2012 DisHonors Awards program. Among those dishonored along with their awards were as follows:

"Obamagasm Award" winner was Chris Matthews.
"Vast Right-Wing Knuckle-Draggers Award" winner was Thomas Roberts (daytime MSNBC host).
"Damn Those Conservatives to Hell Award" winner was Ann Curry.
"The Barbra Streisand Political IQ Award for Celebrity Vapidity" winner was Sean Penn. (David Letterman was a runner up. Better luck next year, Dave.)
"Worst Reporter in the History of Man" winner was Katie Couric.
This next one was a genuine honor:
"William F. Buckley Award for Media Excellence" was awarded posthumously to Andrew Breitbart.
