There was a movie from the days before color in which a character was about to commit suicide. But she reached out by phone one last time before doing the deed. If I remember correctly, a telephone operator got the call, and from there a search ensued to track and find the girl before she did herself in. It took the entire duration of the movie to locate her -- about two hours -- and she was saved. I recall finding the whole thing rather humorous in the way some antiques are since the movie would have been over in about two minutes with modern technology.
But maybe not. Here's a story that's every bit as riveting. It's about a despondent soldier in Tennessee who was about to commit suicide. His buddy reached out to a military facebook page as a last resort. The site administrator saw it around 11:30pm and got busy trying to locate and get the guy help. It took almost six hours, but with the help of the internet and many people, including the guy's Executive Officer, he was found and made safe.
