December 3, 1992, was the date the first text message was supposed to have been sent -- Neil Papworth was the sender, "Merry Christmas" was the message. However, Matti Makkonen is credited as the actual inventor of the mobile short messaging service.
An SMS exchange with Mr. Makkonen appears at BBC, and in response to a question about txtpk, he answered: "No, I don’t hate them. Actually sms can also be seen as a way for language to develop. More symbols, less characters."
