The link goes to a story written 14 years ago, but age doesn't lessen the shock.
It happened in South Florida in the mid nineties and involved a gang whose M.O. involved kidnapping well to do individuals, torturing them until they had turned over all their wealth, then killing them. The story was so fantastic that dismissive police officers refused to investigate when a surviving victim tried to get them to take action.
Here's the link to Pain & Gain. Pete Collins, the Miami New Times reporter who wrote this, did a remarkable job of transforming interviews and transcripts into an interesting narrative. Don't want to read a long article? Just wait for the movie.
