The City of Midland released the crime stats compiled by the MPD which compare 2012 with 2011. As follows:

Note that aggravated assaults are up. That has to be a hard one for the police to get a handle on. It doesn't take a whole lot of effort to commit an assault. But an aggravated assault means the assault must have caused serious bodily injury or involved a deadly weapon. (Picture a drunken brawler breaking a bottle on the bar and wielding it as a weapon. I know, I know, I watch way too much TV.) Anyway, that's behavior that's hard to foresee and prevent.
Burglaries are down significantly. And the police department should get accolades for that. It probably took a lot of policing to catch the burglars they caught. And for every burglar sitting in the slammer, that's a number of burglaries that didn't happen.
