Are internet users that dependent on Google?
Google incurred a complete blackout between between 23:52 and 23:57 BST (5:52pm and 5:57pm CDT) on Friday August16, 2013. Daily Mail reported it based on the the web analysis company GoSquared's calculations.
This had a huge effect in the number of pageviews coming into GoSquared’s real-time tracking – around a 40% drop, as this graph of our global pageviews per minute shows.
Chinese? Iranians? Snowden? Anonymous hackers? NSA? Blown fuse? Squirrels chewed through the wire? No explanations were given, so we'll have to supply our own conspiracy theories. But woudn't it be nice to learn that it wiped out the dossiers Google keeps on all of us?
Whatever the cause, it is rather astonishing that at that particular time 40% of internet users appeared to be trying to use a Google product, and being unsuccesful, they waited it out rather than going to a competitor.
