The Washington Journal guests on January 12, 2014, were Rich Galen, described as "Republican Political Strategist," and Maria Cardona, described as "Democratic Political Strategist and CNN Political Correspondent." And it leads one to suspect that it isn't easy for Washington Journal to find Republicans willing to go on the show when Steven Scully is the host and they've got go up against an Obama advocate like Cardona. Anyway, that morning they found Galen.
This post isn't intended as a review of the whole program but is intended to highlight one telling moment. Watch the whole thing here. Or go to about the 27:44 mark when a caller pointed out how much more news coverage Chris Christie's bridge scandal got versus the news coverage about President Obama's IRS scandal.
Cardona grabbed it like a fumbled football and ran it across the goal line. Here she is:
The liberal media, the conservative media, the main stream media HAMMERED, HAMMERED this president over the IRS scandal. So let's not pretend that this was not covered. Because it was covered extensively, front pages for a very long time.
Cardona went on to give voice to the Obama defense. If only she had said the conservative media had hammered the president she would have been accurate. But including the liberal media and mainstream media in with them was an effort to hide the truth and let them share an honor they didn't earn.
Galen stammered about the appointment of an Obama donor to investigate the IRS case, but he lost the persuasion point. As for actual coverage of the Obama/IRS scandal versus the Christie scandal, Media Research Center reported that in one day the three TV network news programs spent 17 more time covering the Christie scandal than they spent covering the IRS scandal the entire time since it was discovered. That number has since been revised upward. See Deluge: Now 44 Times More TV Coverage of Christie's Traffic Scandal Than in Last Six Months on IRS.
Poor Rich Galen clearly had not seen that item. He took a boy scout knife to a chain saw fight. Steven Sculley, the Washington Journal host who is least able to hide his Democrat leanings, orchestrated this mismatch. And my hat goes off to any conservative who dares go on or attempts to call into that program. Just remember that you're in enemy territory.
