Tom Coburn is everybody's favorite Senator, or should be. But of course, the crony capitalists who've been thwarted by his sense of responsibility for taxpayer money can't like him and will probably be glad to see him leave the Senate this year. As Tim Carney says:
The best testament to Coburn’s time in Washington may be the scorn and fear he earned from the Beltway establishment.
Carney goes on to retell how the Republic establishment fought Coburn and backed his opponent when Coburn ran in the Republican Senate Primary the first time. Check out Carney's article to see a list of Republican who's-who who supported Coburn's opponent, including Kay Bailey Hutchison and Phil Gramm. But Coburn, and the people, won.
He's leaving for health reasons, and we should all hope the very best for him.
Meanwhile, he'll leave some mighty big shoes to fill.
