The issue of whether convicted felons should be able to vote comes up from time to time, and Democrats want it. Their motive, whether framed as fairness or equality, is very simple to identify after looking at some stats. Felons favor Democrats. See Jail survey: 7 in 10 felons register as Democrats. Paul Bedard at WashintonExaminer.com cites the research:
– New York: 61.5 percent register Democratic, 9 percent register Republican
– New Mexico: 51.9 percent Democratic, 10.2 percent Republican
– North Carolina: 54.6 percent Democratic, 10.2 percent Republican
Rather than a blanket yes or no, a better policy for them and all voters for that matter, would be to let all citizens vote as long as they can pass a simple test to prove they possess a minimum level of knowledge to help them decide how to vote. Now that's a radical idea. Imagine the outcry from the politicians who like their voters ignorant and uninformed.
