Thousands of Central Americans are coming to the US in the current illegal immigration crisis. Not helping much is the UN which is pushing the US to treat the Hondurans as refugees. And Obama is even floating the idea of sending people to Honduras to pre-screen prospective immigrants for refugee status.
The immigrants are coming primarily from three Central American countries. We talked about the murder rates in those three countries the other day. The stats cited in that post came from the UN, so let's take a closer look at them as they pertain to Honduras. Click to go to the page from which you can download the spreadsheets for each data set.
One of the documents provides the murder rate in the most populous city in the nation. For Honduras that would be Tegucigalpa which had a rate of 102.2 per 100,000 in 2011. That was higher than the national rate of 91.4 for that year. Solution: move out of the city. However, with a quarter of the workers unemployed that might be easier said than done. The country has an underlying economic problem. Unfortunately, too many well intended folks here in the U.S. are trying to emulate the circumstances that caused that problem.
The mechanism of murder is recorded in one set of data. And they show that 84% of the murders in 2011 involved a firearm. Although citizens may own guns, open and concealed carrying are prohibited. Furthermore, each gun must be registered. Clearly these restrictive gun laws have not stopped people from committing murder.
Finally, let's talk sex. In 2010 93.1% of the victims were male, and 6.9% were female. In 2011 93.2% were male and 6.8% were female. So the granting of any refugee status should reflect those proportions if the concern really is the prospect of getting killed. That comes to roughly nine males for each female to be granted refugee status. That should go over big with feminists. Expect to hear lots of heart rending anecdotes about female victim-hood before this is all over.
