Our chief diplomat, John Kerry, didn't exactly shine when he said Israel and Hamas should have a cease fire, sit down, and address the underlying causes of the conflict. The underlying cause is the desire of Hamas to annihilate the Israelis.
K.T. McFarland notices something that our diplomat in chief probably missed. See Gaza unrest: Mr. Kerry, here's your chance to build a new coalition in the Middle East. It's the old Sherlock Holmes crime solving trick: the dog that didn't bark.
The moderate Arab states have remained silent this time. They know who the real enemy is. Here's McFarland:
The calculation of moderate Arab states has now changed – they may not like Israel and would prefer it didn’t exist, but it doesn’t present a threat to their very existence. ISIS, Al Qaeda and the Muslim Brotherhood do.
The U.S. has an opportunity to form a new coalition in the Middle East. Will Kerry/Obama take advantage of it? It's hard to be optimistic about anything related to the Obama administration. But let's drag out another old saw: A stopped clock is right twice a day.
