In normal times the job of a law enforcement officer is fraught with danger. And these days the arrests reports in the local newspaper are full of incidents in which someone assaulted an arresting officer.
Sometimes those encounters get deadly. Law enforcement officers are on the job by choice, and they assumed the risk when they signed on. Nevertheless, that doesn't matter much when a deadly encounter occurs. Then there are those hot spots where it seems as if residents have drawn bulls eyes on police officers to satisfy racial grievances. It's a dangerous job.
Today in Midland, Texas, the Midland Police Department conducted its annual memorial ceremony. And it was a touching ceremony.

The main speaker was Judge Robin Darr who remarked that police officers who died in the line of duty gave their lives so that we might live. What a burden we carry. How could we ever repay such a sacrifice? About all we can do is honor their memory.
