Let me say up front that I'm not a rodent coddler. But there was a poignant scene that played out on the mean streets of Midland, Texas, this morning.
A dead squirrel in the roadway isn't that unusual. And the most anyone ever does about it is try to avoid getting squirrel parts on their tires. From my perspective, those newly deceased squirrels are potential fox food. Although Fox Friday is on hiatus, I'm holding out hope that the foxes will return some day. And I try not to pass up an opportunity to retrieve something they really like which is an unspoiled squirrel carcass.
But this time something different happened. This particular victim of a fast car was a new mother. And her three little ones couldn't comprehend why mommy wouldn't move. It was a sad scene. They had trouble understanding, and the whole thing was made worse by one of the grief stricken young'uns getting run over, too, before it was all over.
In case you're wondering, I removed both carcasses for future use at the fox feeding station. Yes, this seems like a bizarre eulogy. But it's the circle of life. Every living creature lives by devouring some other thing that once lived.
