Most of us ridiculed the bias free language guide the University of New Hampshire's advocacy-groups produced and which was posted on the UNH website. It has since been removed, and a casual search didn't pull it up.
However, there have been articles about it. See Everything Is Problematic, University Guide Explains and University of NH: Don't Use Words Like 'Rich,' 'American', for example.
While I like to poke fun at the politically correct as much as the next blogger, there's one word I can agree with them about. It's "American." They would replace it with U.S. citizen or resident of the U.S. Now that makes sense.
America has two continents -- North America and South America. Central America gets counted as North America. There are 24 countries in North America -- including the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.
So to call someone an "American" really doesn't tell us much.
Does that make me unAmerican?.
