As far back as 2009 Obama was working on plans to shut down the U.S. base in Guantanamo, Cuba. In the meantime, Obama has been busy releasing or relocating those individuals detained by the Bush administration as threats against the nation's security. Whether they are still threats, we don't really know. Most of us aren't willing to give them the benefit of the doubt. But what do we know? We weren't mentored by Frank Marshall Davis and preached to by Jeremiah Wright.
As for the base at Guantanamo, if Obama has his way, it may end up in the hands of the Cuban government.
The media made a big deal about Cuba's recent release of political prisoners. But they are probably still under Cuban surveillance. And we could only speculate whether they or other dissidents will eventually end up back behind bars.
But what bars? That neat facility at Guantanamo may not have outlived its usefulness after all. It will certainly be ironic for most of us if the Castro brothers used it to house their dissidents and political prisoners. I shudder to think what might take place in the old water-boarding room. But Obamafiles can rest easy knowing that news of such may never leak out.
