Today's morning paper contained this article: Conaway explains budget vote at MCRW luncheon in which Mr. Conaway denotes his priority:
Conaway, chairman of the House Committee on Agriculture, said he voted to approve the bipartisan budget deal that only 78 other Republicans supported in order to prevent changes to crop insurance.
He rakes in about a million dollars from lobbyists and industry groups each election cycle, and he gets 80% of the vote. Unfortunately, the voters concerned about crony capitalism, government subsidies, the government deficit and the huge federal debt are few in number. So he has little to fear. In fact, very few incumbents have anything to fear.
So should we give up the fight? It's tempting, but no. Some day, maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but some day Republicans will begin to see the light, acknowledge that these give away programs benefit mostly big agribusiness, conclude that crop insurance subsidies fleece taxpayers and stop voting for politicians that promote this corporate welfare.
