We've all gotten those calls. It's a robot telling you the IRS is about to sue for non payment of a past due tax debt. Most us simply think, "F U," and hang up.
IRS publication IR-16-014 addresses those calls and alerts us to websites available for online reporting if hanging up doesn't quite satisfy the urge to get at them.
We don't know whether the IRS will actually do anything. Nonetheless, the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration has the IRS Impersonation Scam Reporting website which takes information about the attempted fraud. And it get a little bit of your own personal information, too.
Don't you just love giving personal information to the IRS? It's probably safe. But things like the following headline don't inspire confidence: IRS computer problems shut down tax return e-file system. Oh, brother. Maybe it's just a glitch. Then again, maybe it's a hack. Aside from the actual people involved with the system security or the hack itself, who really knows these days?
