Every few years there's a witch hunt going on. A few years ago the witches were tobacco companies. Now they are people who aren't convinced that anthropogenic global warming is actually occurring. And to the zealots they are sacrilegious to the environmentalist religion and blasphemous to scientific consensus. The witches were called "climate change deniers."
And now some people want them prosecuted and jailed.
They've got short memories. Just a few years ago Italian prosecutors jailing scientists for the crime of providing wrong predictions about earthquake potential. All right minded people were up in arms over that. The science was not settled; the scientists merely got it wrong. And that's not a crime.
In fact, science is never settled, it's an ongoing endeavor. It's dangerous to use criminal punishment to silence scientific debate. Galileo, are you OK with that?
